This Week's Quotation:
Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
~ Philippians 4:8
Divine Character
Yes, think on these things. But don’t stop with just thinking on these things. Let us actually express these virtues in our living. They are the very qualities of character that connect us with the Divine, with God, with the ordering power of Love that governs all creation and resides at the center of all created beings.
And there are so many wonderful qualities to express. Integrity, nobility, regal dignity, generosity, humility, honesty, punctuality, stability, courage, reliability, to name a few. I have a list of thirty-seven that I have posted on the wall of the mailroom where I work. There is an impulse at the core of each of us that urges us to express these qualities.
There are two excellent habits to cultivate in life. The first is to personally express these qualities whenever the opportunity arises. In any circumstance, with any people you meet, maybe just a warm greeting and wishing them a great day. In so doing, the Divine in you connects with and awakens the Divine in others and conveys it into the world.
The second habit is one I especially employ as I engage with the news and other media throughout the day. If I’m listening to the radio and there is a story of a person who is displaying one or more qualities of true character, I immediately support, reinforce, and celebrate this expression in my own consciousness and bless the person. This also circulates that energy into the consciousness of humanity.
All of these qualities and virtues are differentiations of Love, the ordering power of the universe. And I can think of no better way or easier way to do the spiritual work we have come to do on earth than to simply bring forth these qualities consistently in our daily living.
About Open Windows
We, the authors of this blog, dedicate it to the transparent exploration of the world's sacred scripture and enlightened spiritual thought. We believe that the original inspiration of all faiths comes from a common source, named and revered in a myriad of ways. With that understanding, the innumerable symbols, beliefs, and practices of faith cease to divide. They become open windows to a common reality that inspires and unifies us. We find deeper insight and nourishment in our own faith and from the expression of faith from others.
We hope these weekly quotations and meditations speak to your heart and soul.
Yes. Always extend a blessing to those in my world and yes, also extend a blessing to those in the media of true character. With you in that, Jerry. Thank you very much. Love, Tom C.
Thank you for expanding upon the virtues of this bible passage. I love how you extend it into your way of lifting the media events. From Phillipians 4:4 to the end has been one of my favourites and a guiding instruction.
So beautifully put Jerry, thank you.
You are always such a wonderful personal reminder of all this good.
